James (Jim) Truman Hardy Jim Hardy – “The Way I Remember…” Jim Hardy, my dad, left this earth November 18th, 2009.  This morning he went to live with Jesus and I know that he is suffering no more pain and he is whole in every sense of the word.  Where he is, I will one day be and together again (In the presence of Jesus) any mis-memories will be corrected. Dad worked hard all of his life.  He grew up on a farm in West Central Alabama in a town called Gordo where his dad and mother, Oscar and Mattie Belle Hardy, raised him along with his brother and sisters.  Here he learned to work hard, be honest, compete, and when he was still young he gave his heart to Jesus.  The way he told me, there was a Pentecostal Preacher who had a church some 20 miles out of town that came almost every Saturday to the Streets of Gordo to preach about Jesus.  He preached a lot more about hell than Jesus but enough about Jesus to get the job done.  He also brought his two pretty daughters to sing (and I imagine to be a drawing card for the boys).  As Dad told me, he went to look at the girls and listen to the music and came away “a changed man so different I did not even recognize myself.” When WWII broke out, my dad served as a combat engineer in the army.  Although he spoke very little of the service, he fought in the European theater and was involved with the invasion of Sicily.  He and his comrades were also among the first to enter the Auschwitz Concentration Camp in Poland.  Only once did he show me the horrific pictures that he made after Jim and Mary Hardy bounced back and forth from Atlanta to Gordo during the first days of married life together while both worked at adjusting to a post war economy, learning what being married really meant, and working toward “The American Dream”.  Soon Dad and Mom (Jim and Mary Hardy) settled in a small town just outside and to the south of Atlanta called East Point.  Here, Dad worked in the grocery business and shortly became the youngest store manager ever for the Big Apple Grocery chain.  Now they could buy a home.  They found a home in a newly developed area off Connelly Drive on a Street named Castlewood Street.  The name seemed appropriate to them both so they purchased the first house to be built on the street.  At last came “the American Dream!” – their names were Elvin and Melvin Hardy – born about 2:00 PM on the afternoon of August 25th, 1948 and THEIR lives were changed forever. Twins and diapers and heirs to the name and diapers and additional mouths to feed and diapers, and diapers.  There must have been a lot of diapers because when we finally graduated from diapers Melvin and I both got “Graduation Certificates” … I still have mine.  Dad and Mom always wanted a large family, maybe four or five kids.  Somehow, Melvin and I filled that bill rather well.  Twin boys can be industrious little dudes and as such we easily represented four or five or … kids.  After Graduating from Diapers, I guess this was our first real accomplishment in our young lives, we all moved on with our to other things.  “Wiggles” (a yellow, lovable, mongrel dog) made the family complete when she came up to Mom and laid her head on Mom’s lap.  Now Dad had a real family, A beautiful wife, two “darling little twin boys” and man’s best friend a dog (that liked Mom better than Dad.) We all grew through baseball, fishing, working to help Dad in the grocery stores he managed, and through life in general.  Highlights were as follows: On Christmas Dad and Mom worked very hard to get Melvin and I a console organ from Sears & Roebuck.  It was to be delivered on Christmas Eve.  The delivery actually came very late in the night after Dad talked to people at the store and made them to understand how important this gift was for all of us.  He must have been convincing because they delivered two of them.  Melvin and I were thrilled and Dad and Mom were so proud of their little protégés.  We played with the box the organ came in all day long. Baseball was a summer thing and Melvin and I both played, Dad sponsored a team and helped to coach.   Together Melvin and I were invincible.  Melvin was a catcher (the best I ever saw) and I was a pitcher (pretty good as the story goes). There was magic in baseball.  We all loved to be at the field (Grayson Field) and we helped prepare before the games and even clean up after the games.  We all helped and the magic worked its way in all four of us.  Then the day came when we were all cleaning up after the last game was finished. A burning trash barrel found its way into Melvin’s hand and it was badly burned.  He healed but most of the magic was gone.  This has for years been a part of the semi-sweet memories of Baseball that Dad and I shared together. Fishing was a Wednesday afternoon (sometimes) and Sunday afternoon (sometimes) event that Dad and I looked forward to experiencing.  Melvin and Mom fished little but enjoyed the time together and the picnics that were a part of each adventure.  Most of the time I sold my fish and as a proper businessman (businesskid) I always was careful to collect sales tax.  As an adult, I now realize how entertaining that was for everyone around the lakes where I caught and sold the fish.  Was this a point of pride for Dad? I never asked but he has always smiled when he told the story. Then came the time of “The Great Move”.  Actually is was a number of moves.  Dad changed professions and it required moves from East Point to LaGrange, Georgia then to Ansted, West Virginia and Johnson City, Tennessee back to LaGrange, Georgia and lastly to Jonesboro, Georgia.  These were our high school years; Headland High School, Troup County High School, Ansted High School, Happy Valley High, LaGrange High School and then graduation from Jonesboro High School.  Whew!  Just the memory is somewhat tiring.  There were of course the bad times and the good times; there always is, for all people.  The stories I could tell… and someday will.  You see Dad’s new profession was owning and managing cemeteries, some of which have tales of hauntings and ghosts.  Remarkably, these stories coincide with the time Melvin and I lived there.  Coincidence? Oh, the stories I could tell… and someday will. Dad’s oldest (ME!) married first to a beautiful woman named Paula Elaine Parker from Morrow Georgia.  Dad and I always disagreed on who married the most beautiful woman.  In my mind Paula was the clear winner (sorry Mom you were a close second).  Melvin married a short time later to Sandra Gail Russell of Macon, Georgia.  Once again the most beautiful woman question arose and once again there was again disagreement.  Out of three beautiful women who came out on top? Paula of course, but then I (her husband) am the one telling the story… the way I remember it.
